And not everyone who is working in a tree business is qualified to be called an arborist.The safety standard by which the hazardous job of tree work is done without danger is ANSI Z133, or better known among arborists as simply “the Z”. This standard defines two types of working arborists: the qualified arborist, and the qualified arborist trainee.

A lot has changed for us in the past year, as a business, as a family, and as human beings. It all started in one instant on Jan. 25, 2018, when we were told by an emergency room doctor that Kevin had a large mass in his brain – a brain tumor.

Hearing that someone you love has a brain tumor is more terrifying than it even sounds. The mere thought of it is unfathomable unless you actually have the unfortunate circumstance of going through it. And even now, a year later, it’s still hard for me to comprehend. There really are no words to adequately describe it other than to say in that instant the world stopped turning and life as we had always known it suddenly stopped existing.

Scientific name: Sabal Palmetto

Also known as: Cabbage palm, cabbage palmetto, Carolina palmetto


Size: Averages about 45 feet tall, but can grow taller in the wild


Lifespan: Dating Sabal palms is more difficult than other species because they do not have traditional growth rings. It is believed that they can live for as many as 200 to 300 years.

Scientific name: Quercus Nigra

​Also known as: Possum oak, spotted oak, duck oak, punk oak, orange oak

Size: 60-100 feet, 50-80 wide, conical shape

Lifespan: 30-80 years, tends to live longer in drier inland climates

Characteristics: The green leaves are highly variable in shape, with some resembling duck feet and others being spatula-shaped. The leaves can also look like there is a drop of water hanging from them. The water oak produces an abundance of acorns that are an important food source for many animals.
